You should be on the boat at least 1 hour before departure for all trips except tuna. This allows you to check in, buy derby ticket or fishing license.
Dress in layers. Even the sunniest day on the ocean can bring a crisp wind or turn to rain. You can always take clothes off, but you can only wear what you bring.
Rain gear is important. Wear waterproof boots. Wet feet for 12 hours is not a fun day. Also, ponchos are horrible for rain gear - they whip up around your head and you end up wet anyways.
Food & Water. With the exception of halibut or tuna, you don't need a large supply of food. This is a day of fishing - not a weekend getaway. A 6-man boat has limited everything. Small hand coolers are great. If you're with a group, plan a way to put all your daily food/water/drink into small carriers. We want to keep our deck space for fishing.
WDFW provides all the information you need for what is required for your trip. We have catch record cards on the boat. Tuna requires a salmon license.
Being a member of Westport Charterboat Association allows us to participate in the daily derby contest. Tickets must be purchased PRIOR to the day of fishing in order to qualify. Every person must hold their own ticket - they cannot be shared. In 2020, derby tickets cost $5.
If you get a large fish, the captain must sign the ticket and then ticket and fish can be taken to our world-renowned derby booth for weighing.
Prizes can be a daily prize, weekly prize and end of season prize - sometimes you can win all of these! (depends on date)
As a rule, we will fillet rockfish, lingcod, halibut and tuna for a nominal fee.
We will clean salmon free of charge. Salmon must be landed in the round. We can fillet tuna at the dock. Please confirm the crew can/will do this for you.
All fish are bled. It is critical that fish be bled well and all fish aboard our boats are done so at the time of hitting the deck.
Iced fish are the best fish. We have a serious policy of chilling fish quickly. This ensures you take home a beautifully handled fish to serve on your table.
